The smell of sugar spreading through the kitchen, colorful syrups dancing in pans, and the sound of cheerful voices that can’t wait for a delicious treat. In this blog post, I’ll share everything you need to know when making your own lollipops.
I thought it would be fun to share this now that I’ve made a few and am already working on a new batch. Also, because making lollipops is actually a very easy and fun DIY activity.
Whether you want to make memories, organize a creative afternoon, enjoy something sweet, or give a fun treat as a thank-you gift at a birthday party, making your own lollipops is always a celebration. At least, I think so.
Where to start
Ingredients and supplies
Making lollipops starts with gathering the right ingredients and supplies. Luckily, the basic supplies are easy to find, and some of them are probably already in one of your kitchen cupboards.
Ingredients:
Sugar
Glucose syrup or corn syrup
Water
Flavorings, such as vanilla, lemon, raspberry, etc.
Food coloring, optional
Supplies:
Heat-resistant pans
Sugar thermometer
Lollipop molds or silicone molds
Baking paper
A possible method
Now that you have gathered all your ingredients and supplies, it is time to start making your own lollipops. I’ll explain step by step how you can do this:
Step 1: Prepare your workspace
Make sure your work surface is clean and dry. Lay down baking paper to catch any spilled syrup.
Step 2: Make the syrup
Place the sugar, glucose syrup or corn syrup, and water in a pan. Heat the mixture over medium heat and stir until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the mixture to a boil, then place the sugar thermometer in the pan.
Step 3: Boil the syrup
Boil the syrup without stirring until it reaches 150–160°C. This is the “hard crack” stage, which means the syrup will harden as it cools and is perfect for lollipops.
Step 4: Add flavorings and colors
Remove the pan from the heat and add your favorite flavorings and food coloring to the syrup. Stir gently until everything is well mixed.
Step 5: Pour the syrup into the molds
Carefully pour the hot syrup into the lollipop molds. Be careful, because the syrup is very hot. Then place the lollipop sticks into the syrup and twist them slightly so they stay firmly in place.
Step 6: Let cool and harden
Let the lollipops cool completely and harden before removing them from the molds. This can take a few hours, depending on the room temperature.
Step 7: Enjoy
Once the lollipops have hardened, they are ready to enjoy. Carefully remove them from the molds and store them in an airtight container in a cool, dry place.
Creativity during the process
The fun thing about making your own lollipops is that you can endlessly experiment with flavors, colors, and shapes. For example, add a splash of lemon juice for a fresh twist or a few drops of food coloring to make rainbow lollipops. Tip: do this during step 4, while making the syrup.
You can also experiment with edible flowers during step 5. Place them in the lollipop mold once you have filled it halfway with hot syrup. Then fill the mold completely. Let your creativity flow and make lollipops that perfectly match your taste and style.
In short
With just a few simple ingredients and supplies, you can quickly make colorful and flavorful lollipops that will surprise everyone. So what are you waiting for? Head into the kitchen and start experimenting.
