This autumn, the website is once again filled with cozy seasonal inspiration. Lately, I’ve been working on several fun and creative autumn activities that I would love to share with you. One of these activities is making dried orange slices.
Dried orange slices are a perfect autumn treat and can be used as decoration for your home, a wreath, and more, or as a flavorful addition to tea, mocktails, or cocktails.
I mainly used these slices as a flavorful addition to my iced teas and mocktails. Who knows, maybe I’ll write a blog post about that too.
In this blog post, I would like to share my way of drying orange slices with you.
Ingredients
2–3 large oranges
Optional: cinnamon, cloves, sugar. I like making different variations, but this is optional.
Supplies
Cutting board
Knife
Baking tray
Baking paper
Oven
Preparation
1. Preparing the oranges
First, wash the oranges. Then cut them into thin slices of about 3–5 mm thick. Make sure the slices are even so they dry evenly.
2. Optional step: adding spices
Lightly sprinkle some slices with cinnamon, cinnamon sugar, regular sugar, or cloves. This gives the dried oranges a lovely scent and flavor.
3. Drying in the oven
Preheat the oven to 90°C. In the meantime, place the orange slices on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Make sure the slices do not overlap.
4. Drying process
After preheating for 10 minutes, place the baking tray in the oven. Let the slices dry for 2–3 hours, depending on the thickness and moisture content of the oranges. Turn the slices halfway through so they dry evenly on both sides.
5. Checking and cooling
Check regularly to make sure the slices are drying well and not burning. They are ready when they feel dry and leathery. Remove them from the oven and let them cool completely.
6. Storing
Store the dried orange slices in an airtight jar in a cool, dry place. They will keep for about 5 weeks.
See you in the next blog post. Enjoy your homemade dried orange slices! I’m going to enjoy my iced tea with a slice of orange.
