DAY 1: Music Therapy

Updated: May 8

Music therapy can help with stress, sleep problems, and concentration difficulties. In this first day of your music therapy program, we begin by defining your personal goal. You will discover what you want to improve in your life, such as better sleep, less stress, or improved focus and concentration.

Music is a powerful tool that can support relaxation, mental calmness, and a better balance in daily life. By working with music intentionally, you can gradually move closer to your goal. Today we lay the foundation for this process.

Step 1) Choose your music therapy goal

Take a moment to pause and reflect on what you would like to improve. What matters most to you right now? For example, you could choose:

  • Better sleep – if you often feel tired or struggle to fall asleep.

  • Better concentration – if you find it hard to stay focused.

  • Less stress – when you often feel tense or overwhelmed.

  • Improved mood – if you not feeling like yourself and want to shift that?

  • Fewer physical complaints – when you often experience pain or discomfort?

Step 2) Create your own playlist

Now you’re going to choose music that specifically supports what you want to achieve. Music is incredibly powerful, it can genuinely help you move closer to your goals.

Think carefully about your goal and select music that aligns with it:

  • Better sleep: Choose calm, soothing music, such as classical pieces or nature sounds.

  • Better concentration: Go for music with a moderate tempo, like instrumental tracks or soft jazz.

  • Less stress: Select slow, relaxing music, such as ambient soundtracks or nature sounds.

  • Improved mood: Pick music that energizes you and lifts your spirit, like upbeat jazz or positive soundtracks.

  • Fewer physical complaints: Choose gentle, calming music that helps your body relax, such as soft instrumental music or nature sounds

With these tracks, you will create your own playlists (ideally 5 playlists of at least 15 minutes each). In addition, we encourage you to include music that holds positive memories for you, as well as instrumental music that fits your goal.

Step 3) Listen to music

Now it is time to take a moment for yourself. Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed and start the playlist you have just created.Try to sit or lie down in a relaxed position while listening. You do not need to do anything or perform in any way. Simply listen and be present with the music.Let the music affect you without judgment. You may notice thoughts coming and going, or physical sensations in your body. This is completely normal. Try to follow the music as if you are gently floating with the sounds. If you notice your attention drifting, gently bring it back to the music. There is nothing you need to force. Just listening is enough.Take at least 15 minutes for this practice so your mind and body have time to respond to the music.

Step 4) Reflection

After listening to your music, take a moment to pause and reflect on your experience. This moment of reflection helps you better understand what music does for you and how it can support your personal goal.

Try to calmly think back to the listening experience. You do not need to analyze anything or judge it as right or wrong. The main focus is simply becoming aware of what you have experienced.

Answer the following questions for yourself:

  • After listening to your music, we ask you to reflect on the following questions each day:

  • How did I feel before and after listening?

  • Was it easy to keep my attention on the music?

What did I notice in my body or mind? Did I feel more relaxed, focused, or energized?

In this way, we can monitor whether you are gradually moving closer to your goal.

You can also write down your answers to track your progress over time. This helps you see more clearly how music is influencing you and how you are getting closer to your goal.

Step 5) Looking Ahead to Day 2

Today you have reflected on your goal, chosen music, listened, and thought about your experience. This is an important first step in your music therapy journey.Tomorrow we will explore the place where you listen to music. Your environment plays a major role in how you experience music and what effect it has on you.

Together, we will discover how to set up your listening environment in a way that better supports your goal. Think of calmness, comfort, and reducing distractions from your surroundings.Take some time today to notice how this first day has affected you. Tomorrow we will continue building on this foundation.
